Byker Wall taskforce set up after PFI failure

A task force examining how to restore the Byker Wall in Newcastle has been set up.

Housing minister John Healey officially launched the task force last week on a visit to the famous Ralph Erskine estate.

This follows the council’s failure to secure £210 million in private finance initiative funding in July. The bid had involved refurbishing 1,850 homes and improving public spaces.

The taskforce is examining new options for funding these refurbishments. It has met twice.
