First chief construction adviser appointed

The former deputy head of architecture quango CABE has become the chief construction adviser.

Paul Morrell, previously senior partner of construction consultants Davis Langdon, will act as a link between government and the construction industry.

Mr Morrell will lead the low carbon construction review announced in September and due to report its initial findings in spring 2010. The review is part of work to find ways to meet the 2022 carbon reduction targets set out in the Climate Change Act.

Mr Morrell will chair a new Construction Collaborative Category Board, which will build on the existing Public Sector Construction Clients Forum, to get good value in government procurement of construction.  He will asses barriers to the growth of the UK’s low carbon construction sector, promote innovation and coordinate Whitehall response on reports that include construction.

As well as working on the building of Canary Wharf tube station, the Tate Modern art gallery, and UK headquarters for Porsche and ITN, Mr Morrell has also worked on social housing projects for the former Greater London Council, Camden and Wandsworth councils, and Milton Keynes Development Corporation.
