National tenant body members announced

The Communities and Local Government department has released the names of the 50 members of the National Tenant Council.

The group will advise the board of the National Tenant Voice, a new organisation established to give tenants an independent voice on housing issues.

Its members are made up of 20 people who were nominated from national and regional organisations for tenants, and 30 who applied through a recruitment process for tenants who are not already active in tenant groups.

The second group was originally intended to have 26 members, but this was extended to 30 after more than 1,200 people applied through the recruitment process run by Hays Social Housing.

  • This list does not reflect the profile of tenants in social housing especially those in the big cities like London and their interest and concerns would not be represented.

  • Have these people been vetted and approved by Kass? I can see trouble ahead if not.......

  • I'm sure they would have involved Kass in the process to avoid any such trouble.

  • I have no doubt these tenants representatives are the most decent people in the land, but this representation process is totally flawed and utterly undemocratic.
It is ironic our counttry keeps blagging about being the cradle of democracy when 'elections' like this never stop going on.
The only democratic process of electing tenants representatives is one tenancy one vote, representatives of each social landlords choose to stand for elections and they are either voted in or out by all other tenants of the same social landlord.

  • Kass, are you seriously proposing some sort of General Election of tenants representatives? and you wonder why rents have to go up or there isn't enough money to pay for services?!!

  • We should realise by now Kass is never happy no matter what the situation - the only news is bad news. New year resolution from me - not to get involved in the inane ramblings of those not qualified to make such statements.

On the plus side I do know one of the representatives, and have done for some years, and I have complete confidence in their ability, and commitment to improve the services received by tenants. They have a passion about this, and a vast knoweldge of how the sector works.

  • I can only assume that Kass was neither nominated through the regional tenants group, or got turned down as a direct applicant. Says it all really!!

  • Really pleased that the process has ended up with involvement from so many 'new' tenants - those on the nominations list are superb, of course and we all know they are involved in lots of decision-making issues both locally and nationally, but it's nice to see different people putting themselves forward for involvement because they are actually interested in the issues and are willing to give their time and commitment to be involved. A national 'election' would surely have been likely to have ended up with election of those people on the 'nominations' list - how can you vote for people who aren't generally in the public eye? The proof of the pudding is in the eating - let's see what happens now and wish them all a progressive and postive move forward in 2010.

I do not want to be nominated. I want to be elected so I can be accountable to those who would have elected me. One is a representative only if she is elected democratically. Anyone who cares for tenants participations should considere the fact that millions of tenants had not say or vote in producing this list.

  • Kass - I recall from a previous post you stated that you applied but that it was oversubscribed. Hmm....I'm assuming your on this forum just to make mischief!!!
