Planned private sector homes up 114%
Housing associations and councils applied to start building 7,563 new homes in the three months to January, up 9 per cent on the same period in 2009.
But private sector registrations for the quarter rose 114 per cent, from 7,822 in 2009 to 16,704 this year, the National House Building Council reported.
Overall, the NHBC received 24,267 new start applications between November and January, 64 per cent up on the 14,766 made over the same months of 2009.
Scotland was the region to apply for the most social housing starts with 501 homes, a 59 per cent increase from last year’s 316. In contrast, the number of applications in Merseyside fell by 58 per cent to just 62 from 147 during the same period last year.
In both Wales and Northern Ireland public sector new build applications decreased by 19 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.
