Private build in London rises 198 per cent
The number of private new builds started in the UK more than doubled between the first quarter of 2009 and the same period in 2010.
House builders registered 18,371 private homes for warrantees with the National House Building Council in January to March 2010 compared with 8,635 in the first three months of 2009. The number of new social homes registered with NHBC rose by a quarter in the same period, from 7,523 to 9,510.
The biggest percentage increase in private house building was in London where private registrations with NHBC rose by 198 per cent between the first three months of 2009 and the same time in 2010. The Isle of Man saw a 1,900 per cent increase but based on far lower numbers; private house building rose from two in 2009 to 40 in 2010.
Social house building rose by 145 per cent in the west midlands from 2009 to 2010 but dropped by 84 per cent in Northern Ireland where the number of homes built fell from 147 to 23.
