Two arrested after fire in flats
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire at a block of flats in Falmouth.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning in a three-storey block of flats managed by Carrick Housing.
The flames were contained within one flat, but smoke spread through the building.
Two elderly tenants were taken to hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation, and six others were evacuated from the building.
Carrick Housing is now working with residents to ascertain who had contents insurance policies on their furniture and belongings, as the smoke damage in some of the flats is extensive. The trust will also hold a meeting with tenants on the estate where the fire broke out to discuss the arrests.
Mike Owen, executive director of Carrick Housing, said that measures to contain the fire within one flat had worked effectively, and the evacuation had gone according to plan. He added that next week’s meeting would be ‘a very emotional event’.
The two men were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent or recklessly endangering life. Devon and Cornwall police have released them on bail until 29 July.
