Teather secures education role
Former Liberal Democrat housing spokeswoman Sarah Teather has landed a job at the newly renamed Department for Education.
She has been named as minister of state at the department, which was previously known as the Department for Children, Schools and Families. One of the first acts of new education secretary Michael Gove was to change its name.
There had been speculation that Ms Teather’s experience could see her appointed as housing minister, but this position went to the Conservatives former shadow housing minister Grant Shapps.
Other ministerial appointments confirmed so far include Conservative MP Chris Grayling and Liberal Democrat Steve Webb at the Department for Work and Pensions. Mr Grayling was shadow home secretary and had been expected to take a more senior role.
He became embroiled in a row in the run up to the election, after being secretly recorded saying that the owners of bed and breakfasts should be able to turn away homosexual couples.
Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith has already been appointed work and pensions secretary.
Conservatives Greg Barker and Charles Hendry have been given posts at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, which is expected to play a key role in plans to improve the energy efficiency of homes.
And Damian Green, the Conservative MP arrested but not charged over the leaking of confidential documents from the Home Office, will work in that department as immigration minister.
