Stark warning from charity chief exec

The number of eastern Europeans sleeping rough could outnumber other rough sleepers in three years, the head of a homelessness charity has said.

Howard Sinclair, chief executive of homelessness charity Broadway, said the projection was based on past trends continuing. Mr Sinclair made the comments at the call for entries for the Andy Ludlow Awards, which are supported by Inside Housing and celebrate good work in homelessness.

However, he added that efforts to eradicate rough sleeping by the 2012 Olympics should prevent the prediction from becoming a reality.

Fortunately, we will have ended this probably by 2012 so that won’t happen,’ he said
