Guidance seeks to cut emissions from new homes
The Welsh Assembly Government has issued guidance on how developers can meet environmental goals.
The aim is to help reduce carbon emission for new homes by more than 31 per cent compared to buildings built to current regulations.
Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson announced technical advice note 22 on planning for sustainable buildings last week.
‘The assembly government committed to protecting our environment for future generations and this guidance will help achieve this through the planning system in Wales,’ she said.
‘Homes and other buildings account for 40 per cent of our total carbon emissions so clearly cutting this source of greenhouse gases will have a big impact in reducing our carbon footprint.’
The guidance follows a planning policy published in 2009, which said all new homes should meet level three of the code for sustainable homes.
The guidance is also aimed at reducing consumption of water in new homes and promoting the use of more sustainable materials.
The policy expects local planning authorities to consider opportunities for setting higher sustainable standards on strategic sites in their area as part of their local development plan.
