Tristar tenants vote for stock transfer

Stockton-on-Tees council tenants have voted in favour of transferring their arm’s-length management organisation to a housing association.

Tristar Homes, which manages 10,400 homes on behalf of the council, plans to transfer from an ALMO to a new housing group, which it will form together with Housing Hartlepool.

The new body would be able to invest £140 million on improvements and repairs over the next five years.

Eighty-nine per cent of tenants voted in favour of the transfer, which will also provide £13 million for local environmental improvements, and more resources for tackling anti-social behaviour and improving the repairs service.

Steve Nelson, cabinet member for housing at Stockton council, said: ‘This successful ballot should secure millions of pounds of investment in tenants’ homes and housing services and means we can now focus our attention on making this vision a reality.’

Tristar chief executive Steve Boyd said: ‘This is a massive vote of confidence in Tristar Homes from tenants. I am confidence of our future success in Stockton and look forward to working with everyone to achieve our ambitions.’

  • Well done Stockton-On-Tees Council tenants like your counter parts elsewhere in the country you have now signed away at a stroke of a pen your security of tenure and rights that go with it, including any voting influence you had exercised over the councils actions.

I take it as per usual leaseholders were denied the right to vote on the issue.

  • Well done Stockton-On-Tees council tenants. Like your counterparts elsewhere in the country you have now signed up for investment in your homes that could not otherwise have happened, and have now ensured the future of quality affordable housing in your area for future generations. What is more housing associations aren't the devil and if experience elsewhere is anything to go by you'll end up with a much more dynamic and progressive landlord. And all this while maintaining security of tenure and the rights that go with it for as long as you keep your tenancy. Even those who follow you will still have security of tenure and rights through assured tenancies
