House building figures up 39%

A total of 11,474 new social homes were registered in the three months to May 2010, an increase of 39 per cent on the same period last year.

The largest increase in new home registrations was in the west midlands, where 1,304 homes were registered, more than three times the previous year’s figure. In London 1,981 homes were registered, up 83 per cent on 2009, and in the south west 1,651 homes were registered, up 71 per cent.

Registrations fell in Merseyside, by 30 per cent to 130, while there were smaller decreases in Wales, Northern Ireland and the south east.
