£1.8m Glasgow ‘slum’ pledge

The Scottish Government has pledged £1.8 million to regenerate an area of Glasgow likened to a slum.

The Scottish housing minister Alex Neil suggested in March setting up ‘hit-squads’ of council staff back by police and fire officers to clean up Govanhill.

This was after Anne Lear, director of Govanhill Housing Association, submitted a petition to the Scottish Parliament on the ‘slum conditions’ of the area.

Now £1.5million will go towards refurbishing and redesigning backcourts of tenement blocks, creating training and employment opportunities for local residents in the area. And £300,000 will be spent on an enforcement squad to root out rogue private landlords exploiting tenants.
