Councils show need for Gypsy and Traveller sites

Councils in Dorset are preparing a document showing the need for Gypsy and Traveller sites, after funding for pitches was withdrawn.

Nine local authorities, including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Dorset, are working together on a document to show demand for sites over the next 15 years.

Planning consultancy Baker Associates will work on the development plan document, which is expected to take two to three years to produce.

The government has withdrawn £30 million of funding for Gypsy and Traveller sites as part of £230 million of cuts announced to the Homes and Communities Agency’s budget last month.

Dorset county council’s cabinet member for environment Robert Gould said: ‘This is an important piece of work. While a gap between the accommodation needs of Travellers and the number of available authorised sites remains, trespass and the problems associated with that are bound to continue.’
