Figures show fall in rough sleepers

The number of people sleeping rough on England’s streets has decreased slightly, according to statistics collected by the Communities and Local Government department.

A total of 70 local authorities conducted one-night counts of people found ‘bedded down’ in the street, between January 2009 and May 2010.

They found 440 people were sleeping rough, compared to 464 the previous year.

Westminster council had by far the highest count, with 147, a third of all England’s rough sleepers.

The City of London Corporation and Peterborough also had high numbers of rough sleepers, 29 and 26 respectively.
