Coalition commits funding to decent homes programme
The coalition government has continued the commitment to the housing refurbishment programme started by the Labour administration by agreeing funding deals for three landlords.
Salix Homes in Salford, Rykneld Homes in Derbyshire and Redbridge Homes in East London have been collectively awarded £13 million since the general election.
The trio all qualified for the funding after securing the necessary two-star status from the Audit Commission that unlocks funding.
Gwyneth Taylor, policy director at the National Federation of Arm’s-Length Management Organisations, said: ‘We didn’t know that the current administration would commit themselves to the programme.’ She added: ‘These are clear signals.’
However, ALMOs could find themselves having to stretch their refurbishment work over a longer period of time to cope with predicted national budget cuts in the forthcoming spending review. ‘The programme may have to be re-profiled,’ she said.
Round six ALMOs that had failed to secure the two-star status they need to unlock funding were told last year that their funding would be deferred until 2011. The Labour administration later relented by agreeing funding deals for all those which secured two stars.
