Council fears over MoD plan

The Ministry of Defence has announced plans for a 1,650-home development in Oxfordshire, despite council opposition.

The MoD is looking to sell the 321-acre Graven Hill depot in Bicester, which is seen as surplus to military requirements. Proposals submitted to Cherwell Council by the ministry suggest the homes could be built by 2026.

But Michael Gibbard, member for planning and housing at the council, said the plan ‘does not fit well’ with how the authority sees the town developing beyond 2026.

He said: ‘We’re working on a local development framework and this proposal from the MoD came quite late in the day. There will be an eco-town of 3,000 homes to be built by 2026 and so I think residents would feel that further plans would be overdevelopment.’

The town currently has a population of 32,000, which looks set to rise to 55,000 by 2026.
