London building schemes saved from cuts
The London board of the Homes and Communities Agency and mayor Boris Johnson have approved funding for 16 building schemes threatened by government cuts.
The £51.7 million investment will allow work to proceed on 518 homes, across seven sites that were part of the HCA’s Kickstart initiative, and 9 that were part of its Local Authority New Build scheme (see below for the full list).
Both Kickstart and the LANB have been scrapped following a 10 per cent cut to the national HCA budget, and schemes that were not under contract have been put on hold while officials decide which should get the remaining funding.
The schemes approved today will help the mayor to reach his pledge to deliver 50,000 new affordable housing completions by March 2012.
Mr Johnson said: ‘It is absolutely vital that we continue to deliver more, better quality housing to meet London’s housing needs.
‘This funding will provide a major boost to regeneration in the capital and deliver more affordable accommodation to help some of the most vulnerable households.’
The Kickstart schemes, across seven boroughs, are expected to deliver 372 affordable homes. The nine LANB schemes will provide 146 rented homes for 665 people.
Six other Kickstart schemes in London are being considered for the HCA’s private rented sector initiative, which aims to encourage institutional investors into the housing market.
