Peace role for NI landlords
Social landlords will play a key role in tackling segregation in Northern Ireland, following anti-sectarian plans published last week.
A consultation from the office of the first minister and deputy first minister says landlords and the Department for Social Development should promote mixed tenure neighbourhoods which break down religious segregation.
The Chartered Institution of Housing said the ‘shared future’ strategy would be ‘absolutely fundamental’ to the way social landlords operate in the province.
The consultation document said: ‘Fourteen of the 15 most deprived areas of Belfast are highly segregated.’
It added: ‘The current process for the allocation of social housing does not readily take account of the aspiration to live in a mixed community’.
Grainia Long, CIH policy director in Northern Ireland, said: ‘Housing providers must play a really central role in this.’
The document also set out plans to create a new quango responsible for cohesion, The Community Relations Council.
