Bradford’s white estates feel ignored

Residents on Bradford’s traditionally white estates feel like the ‘lowest of the low’, according to new research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The report, Participation and community on Bradford’s traditionally white estates, found many residents of two communities in Bradford and Keighley felt their views were not taken into account and that consultation exercises were purely tokenistic.

Estate residents worked with a team from the University of Bradford as researchers for the report, which found many residents felt powerless to change the quality of life on their estate, even though they often tried to do so.

Jenny Pearce, co-author of the report, said: ‘These communities were once respectable places to live but have been damaged by a process of long-term decline.

‘It is vital to recognise the residents and community activists working to change their estates.’
