Surveyors report fall in construction work
Construction workloads on social housing projects have dropped sharply in the second quarter of the year, according to a survey by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
The RICS survey reports 26 per cent more surveyors reported a fall rather than a rise in workloads in the social housing sector in the three months to 30 June. This compares to the first quarter of 2010, where 3 per cent reported workload increases.
The survey also shows that total construction workloads have fallen, with 7 per cent more surveyors reporting a fall than a rise.
Every region in the UK except London and the south east experienced falling construction workloads.
The survey also showed that surveyors have become more pessimistic about output, employment and profit margins over the next 12 months.
Simon Rubinsohn, chief economist at RICS, said: ‘This survey suggests that it is too early to conclude that the construction industry is on the road to recovery despite the strong contribution the sector appeared to make to the latest GDP data.’
