Woman dies in tower block blaze
A woman has died in a fire in a council-owned tower block in east London.
London Fire Brigade said six fire engines had been sent to the fire on the fifth floor of a 15-storey Barking and Dagenham Council block at 8:24 yesterday morning (Thursday).
The woman, who was alone in the flat, was pronounced dead at the scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The police said the victim had not yet been formally identified.
About 20 people were evacuated from Lexham House on King Edward’s Road and the occupants of three flats have been placed in temporary accommodation following water damage.
A spokesman for Barking and Dagenham Council said most residents were allowed to return to their flats by mid-afternoon.
