Landlords in the north of England know their communities are getting old - the region has a higher proportion of people aged 60 and above than other parts of the country. And that proportion is increasing, expected to account for 24.5 per cent of the northern population by 2020, compared with 24 per cent for England as a whole.
Of course, providers don’t want to end up wondering what they’re doing when they get there. Which is why they are making every effort to address the challenges of an ageing population now. It’s not a new problem, as the story of Railway Housing Association shows. Nor is it easily solved. But the sector must move quickly to address it - before the wondering begins.
