Overall winner - Icon Street, Somerset
- Architect - Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
- Developer - Crest Nicholson
- Contractor - Crest Nicholson
- Planning Authority - Mendip District Council
- Public Realm Architect - Grant Associates
A parcel of 138 two and four-bed homes which aims to incorporate the old fashioned nature of the site’s former inhabitant, a shoe factory, with its urbane neighbour, Bath.
It uses public squares, housing squares, boulevards, streets and mews laid out in a hierarchy to manage traffic speed.
Despite the aim to create a predominantly pedestrian area, the scheme accepts people use cars and has incorporated garages into many of the homes.
The homes also possess ‘sound ecology’ features. Forty per cent of the area is public space, the result of a consultation exercise to make sure the existing community would enjoy the new developments.
