The cuts run deep
The goverment’s programme of public spending cuts are proving devastating for many of society’s most vulnerable people. Another, which has so far been overlooked, is the plight of Britain’s estimated 300,000 Gypsies and Travellers. Our reports on the systemic underspending on new traveller sites highlights a woeful failure of public policy.
The government may be keen to introduce an incentive scheme to encourage councils to grant planning permission to build more sites, but this seems unlikely when it is cutting the funds available for their construction. Inevitable problems over unauthorised sites are simply being stored up for the future. This is all the more galling when cost-effective solutions are already available.
