Bailiffs call on housing officials
Sheffield’s housing department has found out what a visit from the bailiffs feels like first hand.
Its landlord ordered debt collectors to go to the council’s housing officers’ base in the city centre, after the council failed to pay its rent on time. Sheffield council officials are now considering legal action saying the move was heavy-handed.
Cllr Simon Clement-Jones, cabinet member for finance at Sheffield City Council, said: ‘An invoice for the rent had not been received by the date the bailiffs appeared. The date when the bailiffs turned up was only 14 days into the quarter when the rent was due.
‘We did inform the landlord in advance that there could be a delay in payment on this occasion due to a change-over of financial systems.
‘Our litigation department is looking into the legal aspect of this course of action by the landlord.’
