  • Comment on: Pay to stay scheme to fund new affordable homes

Has there ever been so inept a government?

How is it possible for Shapps to believe that all tenants with high incomes should be charged more, whilst at the same time pressing for all tenants to be offered bigger discounts to allow them to buy their own homes?

Does he not see that the most likely beneficiaries of his discounted sale policy will be those with the largest incomes and they might, just might be the very people who are most able to take advantage of it?

Does it not follow, therefore, that far from generating more income that could be reinvested to build new homes, the effect will be to see more homes sold into the private sector? Shapps has thus come up with a means of losing an income stream before it exists and reducing the number of affordable homes available for those in greatest need?

    Genius.

Guilty of over-simplification? No, I am not. There is abundant evidence from studies across the globe to prove the direct causal relationship between excess winter mortality and cold housing. Argue as much as you like but that's a very well established fact. Studies in New Zealand, the United States, by the World Health Organisation......, all trumped by 'heart-breaking pleas against excess red tape? Not as far as I am concerned.

And as for who pays, we all pay. The estimated cost to the NHS of treating those with housing-related illnesses runs into many hundreds of millions. Doubt that? Try doing some research.

Cold homes kill and I don't see why anyone providing a 'service' should be allowed to plead 'excess regulation' when the alternative is allowing people to die needlessly - unless, of course, you value the profits accrued by private landlords as being more valuable than human life. But, clearly, some do.

".... should be free to manage them as they see fit, given their circumstances. It is disgusting and wrong." Whereas providing accommodation that cannot be adequately heated, which is directly related to thousands of unnecessary deaths every winter is absolutely fine.
