Comment on: Affordable homes development falling in London
Perhaps this is the item referred to?

Could you two stop taking lumps out of each other for the sake of it, it's very distracting and offers neither of you much credibility! -
Comment on: Stalled homes get underway after mayor intervenes
And so it would come to pass that Thatcherism was born, and she would smite all her enemies and imbue her friends with the sweetest of oils and the kindest of meats, raising them up to such heights that they may never be assailed, excepting of such time when the meek awake and remember that which was promised and how the chosen ones were to be no more, cast aside and plundered from the four winds until none should hear their cries again.

Comment on: New homes 'could save councils £56 million'
It was neither a city nor St Albans when I lost my head there C'mon Sense. It had been a city, Verulamium, previously, and my home settlement was also named such, but it was no longer a city in stature. A lovely town, as I said.
Mind you, compared to now, the government was far more civilised. -

There is not much saved C'mon Sense when the failing economic policies are making both neighbours in the home you example also needing housing benefit.
The total cost is not the total concern. The social cost will be paid for many years after people are able to return to work, not least from the uprooted families and excluded youth.
St Albans was founded for the long term. Had it been only a short term view then only a wooden fort would have been built. As it was the fabulous town that now exists grew through planning well, investing wisely, welcoming people from all over to make the town prosper. Well worth dying for.

Social rents or fair rents?
Should the social rented sector continue to be subsidised, and if so what would be considered a reasonable rent?
Should subsidy be restricted to the land purchase and build cost?
Any other views on how the cost of housing should be met? -

Don't panic Sancho. A good idea is a good idea and there is no ideological copyright. Your credentials remain, if not enhanced.

True Joe, and this relates back to the point where so many items requireing expenditure from the housing account have been added as housing functions. There is a concensus from the contributors to this thread that such items need to be put back into the community budget, i.e. local or central tax funded.
If this was done with ASB then the civil authorities would definately want to take operational control back too, relieving the overburdened housing function to concentrate on housing matters.
I find Harry's informed viewpoint compelling, and as a result my own principled objection to ASBOs reduced. If they are to continue though, I remain in agreement with you that policing must return to the law and civil agencies set up to do so. -

Thanks Harry - your perspective is real and informative. I'm impressed by the view that the initiative is working. The press paints such a negative view, but I can accept that this is often far from reality.
This is one of the reasons I started this thread so that fact and opionion can be stated aside from the hyperbole.
A question area though. If an ASBO is applied to a family member living in private accomodation, would that family face eviction if they did not expel them from the home?
If they do not face the same sanction, is there a way to make the law equitable? -
