Circle: Orchard Village, Rainham, Essex

“This was one of the best submissions in terms of resident testimonials.”

Richard Hill

The former Mardyke estate gets its new name from the community, which chose to reflect the fact the homes are built on land that was once a fruit farm. The regeneration scheme, which attracted Homes and Communities Agency funding of £28.3 million over its first two phases, followed a ballot in which residents voted for the transfer of their homes from the London Borough of Havering to Old Ford Housing Association, a subsidiary of Circle, in 2008. Resident Hayley Hunt said: ‘I used to feel ashamed of where I lived. Now, it’s like I’ve won the lottery.’
