Did you miss out on Olympics tickets? Well, fear not. Sir Robin Wales reckons he has a much better option.
‘The hottest ticket in town is to the opening of the Stratford Westfield,’ the charismatic mayor of Newham, home to the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, told delegates at last month’s Chartered Institute of Housing conference in Harrogate.
Continuing his pitch for the east London shopping mall, he said: ‘Have you been to the Westfield in Hammersmith? Wouldn’t get out of bed for it. Ours is going to have a John Lewis - and I know you all shop in John Lewis.’
Social tenant Bob Crow, the general secretary of transport union RMT who reportedly earns more than £100,000, has plenty of options if he decides he wants to become a shared owner of his home.
‘We clearly have some other options for him,’ joked Melissa Madjitey, research and development manager at Mr Crow’s landlord London & Quadrant, plugging its various intermediate housing options at a Harrogate fringe session.
Grant Shapps may be a housing A-lister - but that status isn’t universal.
A photographer summoned to capture the housing minister at Harrogate was clearly not one of Mr Shapps’ 24,800 Twitter followers. Arriving at the allotted time, he asked where he could find ‘Greg Snapps’.
Still, Mr Snapps, as Closed Circuit now fondly thinks of him, deserves a mention for his stamina. Witnesses reported the housing minister resolutely holding his own at 3am on Thursday in the Majestic Hotel bar.
Meanwhile the last EVER last night of the CIH conference in Harrogate, before the event moves to Manchester next year, saw some delegates enjoying a karaoke session with a live band.
Later in the evening 2009 X Factor finalist Jamie Archer performed a few numbers, telling the audience repeatedly what a great time he was having. Closed Circuit wasn’t entirely sure he meant it.
More convincing was a grinning Michelle Reid, chief executive of the Tenant Participation Advisory Service, who brought the house down with her version of I Will Survive. Is it too late for Ms Reid to enter X Factor 2011?
