No meetings to end lifetime tenancies

The Chartered Institute of Housing and the National Housing Federation have held and continue to hold meetings with all political parties at which various subjects are discussed.

However it is not the case that, prior to the election, either organisation held a meeting with Conservative ministers at which details on the subject of ending lifetime tenancies were discussed. The implication that we were part of some pre-election Conservative conspiracy is wholly inaccurate.

As the government is actively considering social housing reforms we have now had - and will continue to have - meetings with ministers and officials on this, as our members would expect. We have both put on record our thinking around security of tenure and will continue to discuss our ideas with ministers.

We firmly believe that any changes to social housing should be considered carefully. That is why we have asked Grant Shapps to establish a commission to take a measured approach to what is such a key issue for current and future tenants, housing professionals, landlords, lenders and taxpayers.
