No official path for tenant inspectors

I was surprised to read about ‘the official qualification’ for the role of tenant inspector (‘School for sleuths’ Inside Housing, 6 August).

This was news to me, especially given that the Tenant Participation Advisory Service has been successfully providing tenant-inspector training and working with skilled and competent tenant inspectors for more than five years.

Let’s look at the facts. The TPAS experience is drawn from work done over five years with more than 60 housing providers and hundreds of tenants. It paints a different picture.

What we do know is that our holistic approach to tenant inspection has identified a number of critical success factors, including organisational buy-in, clear objectives, proper planning, sound inspection methodology as well as trained, empowered and supported tenant inspectors.

At TPAS we have the evidence to show what really works and what successful tenant inspection looks like - really, that is a fact.

There is no ‘official qualification’ for tenant inspection. One other thing we insist on at TPAS is that resident inspectors make sure they check the facts, are properly informed and base their reports on evidence.
