Private sector must offer more security
A current disincentive for households whose circumstances have improved to voluntarily move on from social housing is the lack of security of tenure available in the private rented sector.
Households would have more confidence to move if they felt they were exchanging one home for another that they would have a right to occupy for a reasonable time.
Rather that decreasing security in social housing, the government should be considering increasing it in the private sector. Until this happens, the private rented sector will never be a long-term viable option to meeting housing need.
