£40m committed to Welsh housing and regen

The Welsh Government has renewed its commitment to funding capital projects in Wales by allocating more than £40 million to housing and regeneration.

Finance minister Jane Hutt published the second supplementary budget for 2011/12 this week and announced £19.6 million to increase the supply and choice of housing, £1.5 million for disabled facilities grants and £20 million into ‘strategic regeneration areas’.

Nick Bennett, chief executive of Community Housing Cymru, said the Welsh Government should allocate £122.5 million from the capital spending pot to providing 1,877 social homes.

‘We wrote to ministers before Christmas urging them to fill the funding gap made by the comprehensive spending review,’ he said.

‘Not only would this additional funding of £122.5 million provide a boost to the creation of much needed affordable homes, it would support jobs and apprenticeships at a time of record unemployment across Wales.’
