Communities invited to bid for design funding
A programme to help communities improve building design in their local areas is being launched today.
The Design Council has launched the programme, called Design Your Neighbourhood, for community groups who want financial and professional support to design new housing and to promote good design in proposed developments.
The project will link community groups to local design experts who will provide advice on architecture and planning. Financial aid of up to £10,000 will be available to 10 groups.
It will be led by the Cabe team, formally the government’s architecture and built environment advisor, which joined the Design Council last year after its funding was pulled.
Nahid Majid, director of the Cabe team at the Design Council, said: ‘Cabe’s experience shows that good design can revitalise economic activity, create great new homes for people, bring the community together and result in inspiring new buildings for everyone.
‘There are so many great ideas out there and lots of energy to make them happen. The Design Your Neighbourhood programme is just about linking communities to professional expertise so that by using design an idea can be made a reality.’
Community groups across England can apply for funding before 20 August by visiting the Design Council website.
