Do as I say, not as I do

The finding by an employment tribunal that nine female housing inspection support officers were ‘directly and knowingly’ paid £10,000 less than male counterparts who were doing the same job will raise eyebrows across the sector.

Unfortunately, the tribunal found that this was no administrative error caused by a restructuring process. When the women complained initially, their salaries were increased, but a £5,000 pay gap remained. For any organisation to behave in this manner is bad enough but for it to be one that is supposed to be inspecting and regulating the performance of others it is disgraceful.

A body which claims a commitment to ‘equality and diversity’ as one of its eight core values and to want to treat people with ‘dignity and respect’ needs to do much better.
