Isn't rent control the obvious way to deal with soaring private sector rents plus social housing with adequate capital grants to keep down rents? Housing benefit is an example of massive state waste, subsidising low wages and private landlords, without producing a single community asset.

Daedalus: yes, you have emphasised the 'some' rather than 'any'. However, that highlights why this is a blunderbuss measure. It will unfairly affect people who become unemployed and will also affect people in low paid work

This seems a blunderbuss of a measure to address the problem of 'some people who make a lifestyle choice of worklessness.' Firstly, as usual the anti-scrounger brigade assumes that anyone who is unemployed has made a lifestyle choice. When people who have worked hard are made redundant they may be affected by the benefit cap precisely when the state should be coming to their aid. How does Daedalus defend this? Secondly, the best time to address this issue is when there is plentiful employment. If the objective is truly to get people into work, this is about the least favourable time for such measures.

Why is Frank Field promoting the extension of Tory housing policies which have been disastrous for the community at large? Massive housing shortages, ballooning housing benefit costs? How can a discounted sale price enable development of a replacement property? Replacement of sold off stock doesn't happen and is eye wash. Why on earth is Field a Labour MP?
