    Organised chaos

    Serious business | 11/05/2012 3:42 pm

The second law of thermodynamics and the financing of new housing are not, at first glance, subjects that lend themselves to easy analogy. But bear with me for a moment…

    Less is less

    Serious business | 20/04/2012 3:49 pm

Chris - yes, the affordability of 'affordable housing' is a massive, massive issue. But it is almost seperate from this argument.
Under the new model, it doesn't matter if your landlord is a for-profit developer or nor-for-profit housing association if both can charge the same level of 'affordable' rent.
Yet, if we are just talking about upping the supply it's got to be a case of the more the merrier.

The thing is, Chris, if there is going to be no more capital subsidy then having the private sector take up some of the slack of under supply has got to be a good thing.
It shouldn't matter that these companies make a profit - in fact it's their ability to make a profit that means they can build homes without leaning on the government.
