It was a case of ground control to Grainia Long last week as delegates at the Chartered Institute of Housing’s south west conference were treated to evidence that there is indeed life on Mars… and it’s in the mood for dancing.
For reasons unknown, the CIH showed pictures of green aliens dancing to salsa music on a big screen between sessions.
James Pargeter, head of residential projects at Drivers Jonas Deloitte, was one of the puzzled delegates. ‘Worried you’re seeing things…Have you been at the west country beer again?’, he asked on Twitter.
Closed Circuit could answer yes to the latter question - but is still sure that the intergalactic interlude wasn’t a scrumpy induced mass hallucination.
The story about councils in London shipping homeless people to less expensive areas of the country received huge amounts of national press coverage last week.
One local authority in the capital, however, had more important things to worry about. Step forward Greenwich Council, which was approached by Closed Circuit last week in an attempt to find out which authorities were considering housing homeless people outside the capital.
The council’s press officer said it would be unable to provide any response because the Queen was visiting the next day to re-open the Cutty Sark. It’s good to know that when other local authorities were getting into a tizzy over homeless people there were still some councils left to pour the champagne.
Staff at the Communities and Local Government department look like they will be staying in London - despite one MP’s best efforts to relocate them hundreds of miles away.
John Mann, Labour MP for Bassetlaw, tabled a rarely used ‘presentation bill’ - a type of private members’ bill - to move CLG HQ to the north west. He believed this would mean civil servants would make ‘decisions based on experiences they rarely get in Whitehall’.
But last week the day allotted for the bill’s second reading came and went without Mr Mann making an appearance. So it’s still Eland House rather than Penny Lane for the CLG’s stalwarts.
