
What’s the Benefit? was launched in July 2010 in response to government proposals to reform the housing benefit system introduced in the emergency budget after the coalition government came to power.
The campaign attracted widespread support with nearly 2,000 people signing an online petition backing its key aims. Many of the government’s proposals faced strong opposition as the measures went through parliament, with MPs and peers clashing on key issues.
What’s the Benefit? formally ended in March 2012 when the Welfare Reform Act received royal assent, although Inside Housing will continue to write about the issues raised and argue the case for fairer housing benefit reform.
