Captain Orr-beard

“Barbara Spicer, do do do do do do do do do do do do.” Closed Circuit’s spies find it very difficult to think of the Plus Dane chief executive’s name without humming the tune to Duck Sauce’s 2010 hit Barbra Streisand. We even took advantage of #housingday to ask Ms Spicer on Twitter whether her staff sing that song to her at Plus Dane. Her response? A resounding ‘No’. Instead, apparently, they sing the lesser known song by Underworld called Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future. All this from a punk music fan dubbed by housing IT consultant Tony Smith as the “Siousie Soux of housing”. Rock ‘n’ roll.

Another big hitter clearly enjoying his #housingday was David Orr, although Closed Circuit suspects the National Houisng Federation chief executive really wanted to take part in a different national day altogether.

While #housingday was trending all day on Monday, it wasn’t the biggest event on Twitter, trailing behind the far more illustrious National Talk Like A Pirate Day. Old seadog David Orr admirably got in to the spirit of both. When asked which football team he supported, the National Housing Federation chief executive responded with ‘”Hearrrts me hearties”.

Closed Circuit was hoping Captain Orr-beard would go further and deliver his speech to the National Housing Federation conference on Wednesday in his pirate voice…..but he didn’t.

While many people enjoyed #housingday it was left to blogger Joe Halewood to play the role of grumps (someone has to). He began the day by complaining that the Housing Day logo was “very Freudian and very toxic” “Wouldn’t be #housingday without 243 emails in my junk box every 3 hours!,” the Liverpudlian consultant whined. The injustice of it all.

He then went on to complain that “housing yet again talks only to housing on #housingday”, he may have a bit of a point here although he is surely aware that Twitter is open to everyone to use. “Sorry, I promised to be nice to the sector on Housing Day”, Mr Halewood also blogged. Don’t worry Joe, we are not offended.
