Howard Farrand's tie is irrelevant

I understand that Inside Housing has received some criticism that Howard Farrand, president of the Chartered Institute of Housing, was ‘disrespectful’ to the students who interviewed him recently because he was not wearing a tie. (Inside Housing, 29 January). Get a grip!

Mr Farrand gives huge amounts of time and energy in the interests of his own organisation and the communities where we work, to say nothing of the charity he is supporting this year, Homeless International.

He works especially hard to promote the interests of young people and those in the early stages of their working life, which makes this silliness all the more irrelevant.

By all means, let’s challenge the president on housing and policy matters - I do myself, as he will confirm. But leave the nonsense out.

Just for the record, Howard does sometimes wear a tie.
