The development of the London Accessible Housing Register moved a step closer last week when the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, awarded the contract for the first phase of the project to Home Connections, the choice based lettings scheme.

The register, which will give disabled Londoners better information on accessible housing, is part of Capital

Moves, the pan-London choice based lettings and mobility scheme run by a partnership consisting of the Greater London Authority, Association of London Government, the Housing Corporation and the London Housing Federation.

Kate Dodsworth, regional manager at the London Housing Federation, said the first phase of the project would involve the development of a pilot register before the roll out of a full register, involving all London councils, at the end of 2006.

'At the touch of a button, disabled people will be able to access all suitable properties,' she said

Mayor Livingstone said the register would make choices about where to live 'as real for disabled people as other groups'.

He said: 'Disabled home seekers in London can look forward to being far better informed about their choices and to a system that is consistent across the capital.'
