Council poised to build after 25-year break

A London borough is poised to start building new council housing for the first time in a generation.

Islington Council last week won planning permission to build 10 new family homes on the site of an old housing office. It plans to start building in spring. It will be the first council housing built in the borough for 25 years.

Terry Stacy, the council's executive member for housing and communities, said it had made the move to help families in overcrowded in accommodation and to provide homes for the borough's burgeoning population.

The cash for the new build will come from planning deals with developers building major schemes like office blocks elsewhere in the borough.

'We are spending millions and building much more affordable housing than our neighbours despite being one of the most densely populated boroughs in London,' Mr Stacy said.

The six flats and four houses on the Boleyn Road site will be managed by Homes for Islington, the borough's arm'slength management organisation.
