Gateway drive lags behind
The government drive to build 160,000 homes in the Thames Gateway by 2016 has fallen way behind schedule.
The Communities and Local Government department has estimated that between 6,500 and 7,000 net additional dwellings were completed in the gateway in 2007/08. But in its delivery plan for the Gateway, published last November, the department predicted there would be approximately 13,000 completions for the year.
The latest figures were revealed in the Gateway’s annual report, published last week.
It also reveals that the target of 160,000 new homes is unlikely to be met. The department had previously described this figure as an ‘anticipated output’ but it has now been downgraded to an ‘ambition’.
Tory shadow regeneration minister Stewart Jackson said: ‘This is yet more evidence that Labour’s handling of the important Thames Gateway project has been a shambles.’
A CLG spokesperson said: ‘We remain committed to our long-term ambitions for housing in the Thames Gateway and will be keeping our 2016 aspirations under review.’
