Minister promises finance review will help tenants

A group of MPs have received assurances from the housing minister that the government’s review of council housing finance will provide ‘the solution tenants need’.

Margaret Beckett met with a delegation of MPs from the House of Commons council housing group last week.

Mr Mitchell, who chairs the group, said afterwards: ‘We received a warm and sympathetic response from the minister who acknowledged that councils have insufficient resources to manage, maintain repair and improve existing council homes.

‘She reassured us that the review of council housing finance will provide the solution tenants need.’

He added: ‘The review has to come up with proposals, which the Treasury has to accept, that will put a stop to the robbery from tenants’ rents and council housing capital receipts so that councils get the allowances they need.’

But Mr Mitchell said he wanted an immediate moratorium on stock transfers before the review reports.

  • But what about those councils who have already 'sold' their stock or most of it? Tenants, mainly Leaseholders still have to foot the bill for RSL's ridiculous schemes that fall way outside the decent homes initiative. Will Mrs Beckett give those so affected a "warm and sympathetic response"?
