Boris plans outer London growth hubs
London mayor Boris Johnson is considering proposals to concentrate housing growth in outer London in certain areas rather than allowing it to spread more evenly.
The suggested ‘strategic outer London development centres’ would have a greater emphasis on economic development than surround town centres, accompanied by an increased densification of housing.
The idea is included in a consultation on the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, published yesterday. This states the development of such areas would ‘offer the potential to develop a transport strategy that can deliver significant benefits’.
The document says these might include reduced congestion, lower CO2 emissions, improved transport links, and reduced costs.
There are other options on the table, however. An Outer London Commission set up by the mayor is also considering an alternative proposal that would see growth concentrated in inner and east London.
This was put forward in the 2008 version of the London Plan, the mayor’s key strategy for housing. An updated version of this is expected later this week, although the Outer London Commission is not due to release its initial findings until July.
The transport strategy states that its priorities in this area will be dependent on the direction taken by the London Plan.
