Duties confirmed for new CLG ministers

The responsibilities of the ministers at the new look Communities and Local Government department have been finalised following the reshuffle.

As communities secretary John Denham will take overall responsibility for the department, and will also focus on key policies including the Thames Gateway regeneration and the Olympics.

John Healey, the new housing minister, is responsible for housing, planning, and climate change and sustainable development. He is the only minister who remains at the CLG following the reshuffle, having moved from this previous local government role.

Rosie Winterton joins the department in a shared role with the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Her responsibilities include local and regional government.

Both Ms Winterton and Mr Healey will attend cabinet when there are discussions that relate to their areas of responsibility.

Four junior ministers have joined the department. Shahid Malik takes responsibility for cohesion, and will also work on the Thames Gateway and Olympics. Ian Austin will be involved in housing and regeneration, planning, and climate change and sustainable development.

The two other junior ministers, Sarah McCarthy Fry and Lord McKenzie, will mainly be concerned with aspects of local government.

Two of the ministers, John Healey and Ian Austin, are due to speak at this week’s Chartered Institute of Housing conference in Harrogate.
