Christine Laird loses costs appeal
A former chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing has failed to overturn a costs ruling in a case against another former employer.
Christine Laird won a case brought by Cheltenham Borough Council accusing her of fraud and misrepresentation last June. The council had tried to sue her for £1 million, claiming she had lied about her health on her application for the post of managing director.
On losing the case, the council was ordered to pay 65 per cent of Mrs Laird’s legal costs, leaving her with a £280,000 bill.
In the Court of Appeal last week, Ms Laird lost her attempt to overturn the costs ruling, and will now have to pay the legal fees herself.
Her husband, Hugh Laird, said he was disappointed with the result. ‘We also feel that the outcome is unfair as we would have won if the legal rules hadn’t changed in April last year,’ he said.
‘But this result does not change the fact that Christine won the case.’
