Tenant involvement celebrated at awards

The winners of the Tenant Participation and Advisory Service northern region awards have been announced.

At an awards ceremony in Manchester last week, host Mike Shaft announced the winners of six awards recognising those who work with tenants, from contractors to landlords.

Special tribute was paid to the late Sean Garlick, a nominee for tenant of the year, who passed away suddenly in December. Mr Shaft said: ‘Sean was dedicated to improving the lives of others through the services they receive. He gave of his time freely for the benefit of others. He volunteered, he got involved and he made a difference.’

Also speaking at the awards were Graeme Foster, assistant director for tenant excellence at the Tenant Services Authority and Michelle Reid, chief executive of TPAS. Mr Foster gave a presentation on the regulator called ‘TSA’s got talent’, in which he explained the relationship between the TSA, landlords and tenants.

Ms Reid said there had never been a more pertinent year to celebrate the sector’s achievements. She said: ‘The impact that the economic downturn has had on the housing market has in turn left its impression on the social economy, construction industry and supply chain as a whole.

‘Despite this, people from across the social and affordable housing sector have come together and worked harder than ever to deliver some fantastic results.’
