Minister to clear up Glasgow 'slum'

The Scottish housing minister has suggested setting up ‘hit-squads’ to clear up an area of Glasgow.

Alex Neil’s comments came after Anne Lear, director of Govanhill Housing Association, submitted a petition complaining of ‘slum conditions’ in her area.

She called on the Scottish parliament to urge the Scottish Government to conduct an inquiry into the levels of social housing below a tolerable standard and the impact poor living conditions were having on the health of residents.

Mr Neil suggested at a public petitions committee last week that landlords were the root of the problem.

‘The core problem is slum landlords,’ he said after the meeting. ‘What I am suggesting is that all of us working together, the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and others should look at putting together a hit-squad to go in and sort out the slum landlords.

‘If we can get rid of the slum landlords that will break the back of the problem and give the people of Govanhill a decent future to look forward to.’
